School Dinners

At Eastwood Primary School and Nursery children can have a school dinner, bring in a packed lunch from home or go home for lunch.

Our school dinners are not just delicious – they are good for you too. They meet the national nutritional standards that were introduced in 2006 to make sure that children have a healthy and balanced diet.

If your child has a food allergy or intolerance, or special diet based on religious observance, please let us know. We will be happy to cater for them.

School dinners cost £2.50 per day. This should be paid via our online service. Please speak to the school office for more information.

Free School Meals

There are two types of Free School Meals in schools. Universal Free School Meals (UFSM) is for every Reception, year 1 and year 2 child in the country. You do not apply for UFSM. This provision stops when your child enters year 3.

The other Free School Meals ( FSM) is  if a parent/carer is able to claim FSM. If you are unsure whether you can claim free school meals for your child, please contact the school or visit www.southend.gov.uk for more information.

Your child may be able to get free school meals if you get any of the following:

  • Income Support

  • income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance

  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance

  • Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999

  • The guaranteed element of Pension Credit

  • Child Tax Credit (provided you’re not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190)

  • Working Tax Credit run-on - paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit

  • Universal Credit - if you apply on or after 1 April 2018 your household income must be less than £7,400 a year (after tax and not including any benefits you get)

Children who get paid these benefits directly, instead of through a parent or carer, can also get free school meals.

Your child may also get free school meals if you get any of these benefits and your child is both:

The first time that you apply and are  eligible for free school meals the school will give you £35 Sports Direct Voucher and £25 school uniform voucher.  We strongly encourage you to apply for free school meals as it brings many benefits to your child and the school (see Pupil Premium section for more information)

Under the Government Initiative all children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are entitled to a free school dinner.

All children are encouraged to eat our lovely dinners.  This is classed as Universal Free School Meals FSM.
