Stars of the Week
Another super week with Galaxy class.
In English this week we have been writing our very own fantasy narrative based on our text, The Thames and the Tide Club. The children used some powerful vocabulary to help bring their stories alive and worked hard to include dialogue within their stories. I was very impressed!
In maths we have been working with Fractions. We have been working on adding and subtracting fractions, including partitioning the whole. We then moved on to finding unit and no unit fractions of amounts where the children were also asked to prove/disprove given statements. Super effort Galaxy class!
I hope you all have a lovely weekend.

Week 2
Another fantastic week for Galaxy class. Well done!
In English this week, we have continued reading the Thames and the Tide Club which the children are really enjoying. We have been writing diary entries and practising using the first person and present perfect tense. The work produced was of an excellent standard. We also worked on developing our debate skills and practised presenting different views and opinions about what has happened in the story so far. You were fabulous - Well done Galaxy class!
In maths we have been investigating volume and capacity. We have thought about how we measure volume and capacity using mixed units (litres and millilitres). We have been comparing units of capacity and volume and worked on further developing our reasoning and problem-solving skills involving addition and subtraction.

Summer 1
Week 1
A wonderful start to the summer term! Galaxy class have worked very hard this week and I am extremely proud of what they have achieved.
In maths we have been looking at mass. This involved comparing, estimating and measuring the mass of objects. Moving on to solving problems involving grams and kilograms, in which the children were required to convert the amounts and find midpoints between two intervals.
In English lessons we are reading The Thames and the Tide Club – a club which all the children are now proud members of! The book tells the story of a group of children who enjoy walking the river shores searching for treasure and secrets! We started the week off by creating a 3D model of an ‘underwater London’ and then used this to inspire a creative writing piece about the secrets they thought they may find under the river.

Well done to Alayna for writing a lovely persuasive letter stating why she should become a member of the Thames and the Tide Club
Well done to Teddy for excellent maths work. He worked confidently when using scales to compare, estimate and measure the mass of different objects.
See you next week.

Local Councillor Visit - Robert McMullan
Today, we had a visit from our local councillor. We learnt about his role and asked him lots of questions about his job.
Here are some of the things that we learnt:
- around 1,100 voted for him to become councillor
- he also works at a bank and completes most of his councillor role in the evenings!
- he helps to decide where Eastwood Park ward spend their money
- he spends lots of time helping people with the 3ps - parking, potholes and pavements!
- he talked to us about recycling, reusing and remaking
- he meets the public in Kent Elms library every fortnight to discuss their problems and to see if he can help
- there are 51 councillors in Southend!
- the youngest councillor is 19
- you have to be 18 to become a councillor or vote for a councillor
- you have to be elected to be councillor and this is decided again every 3-4 years
He told us that if we or our parents have any concerns about our local area we could contact him through the MySouthend website: MySouthend – Southend-on-Sea City Council
